Tři tisíciletí ode dneška: svět se změnil k nepoznání. Lidé ze Země jsou nyní členy Společenství systémů (Systems Commonwealth) - vesmírného superstátu s milionem členských světů, prostírajícího se přes šest galaxií a trvajícího už deset tisíc let. Mír, bezpečí, právo a pořádek na jeho území střeží elitní Vrchní stráž (High Guard) - jakási vesmírná obdoba jízdní policie a námořního vojska.
Ale zlatý věk se rychle chýlí ke konci. Válkychtivá frakce geneticky modifikovaných nadlidí, známých jako Nietzscheáni, chystá spiknutí s cílem svrhnout mírumilovnou vládu Společenství a nastolit místo něj totalitně ovládané impérium. A prvním krokem je zničit Vrchní stráž.
Těžký křižník XMC-10-284 Andromeda Ascendant pod velením kapitána Dylana Hunta také padl do nietzscheánské pasti a měl být zničen, tak jako dvě stovky lodí před ním. Kapitán Hunt evakuuje posádku a pokusí se o únik; uvízne však s lodí v gravitačním vlivu černé díry.
Když je po třech staletích Andromeda ze singularity vyproštěna, probouzí se její kapitán do světa, který nepoznává: velkolepé Společenství se po občanské válce vyvolané Nietzscheány rozpadlo a bylo nahrazeno bezvládím. Kapitán Hunt si stanoví vskutku zásadní cíl: znovu vybudovat Společenství systémů, vnést řád do chaosu a znovu zavést civilizaci v nebezpečném a barbarském vesmíru...
